How to Reach Your 2024 Health Goals

If you’re like most people you’ve made some sort of New Year’s resolution or goal for the upcoming year that has something to do with your health. I know I have!

My weight has fluctuated ever since I hit puberty, but one thing that has remained constant is my ability to lose weight when I both need and want to. Until this past year. I had both the need and the desire and yet nothing was clicking. I did all the things I normally do, but I just couldn’t make it stick.

I finally decided that I needed some help. Unlike almost every other thing in life that I do, I wasn’t going to be able to do this one alone. Almost magically as I was coming to this realization, I saw an ad for Weight Watchers.

After deliberating for a couple days, I joined the program, and I joined the version where the meetings (both in-person and virtual) are included. I wasn’t super interested in the points/fitness tracker or the online community, but I felt like I needed to connect with others one-on-one who were going to support and encourage me.

I wasn’t ready to attend a meeting right away because I was traveling, but I felt like I needed to do something so I decided to give the tracker a try. It worked wonders! I became so much more aware of what I was eating and how much I was moving on a daily basis. I started to make changes in my eating and exercise habits without even really realizing it.

Surprisingly, the tracker became the health pal that I needed and it set me on a new path to both weight loss and overall health. I even thought I would get tired of it, but almost two months and 18 lbs later and I’m still going strong.

I have yet to attend a meeting, although I do plan to after the New Year. I posted in the community forum the day I joined, but haven’t visited the site since. It turns out the tracker was what I really needed and I’m so glad I made the decision to join this inexpensive program because it was just the boost I was looking for.

My takeaways from this experience that may help you, too:

  • Get a health pal. “They” always say that you’ll do better if you have a buddy, but sometimes you just don’t have that particular buddy. With all the online programs that are out there, you do now. Weight Watchers and Noom are two examples. Why go through it alone when you don’t have to?
  • Shake things up. You never know what’s going to be the thing that will kick your goal into high gear. I thought it would be meetings with other people that would do it for me, but it ended up being as simple as a tracker. If you’re stuck in a rut, try something different to get unstuck. Some other tracker apps are: MyFitnessPal, LoseIt!, and MyNetDiary.
  • Relinquish some of the responsibility. When you try to go everything alone it can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. By joining a weight loss program, a fitness group, even a health forum, you’re putting some of the onus on others to help you. It can be just the crutch you need when you’re struggling.
  • Try lots of different things. If the first thing you try isn’t a fit, try try again. Something will click and that will be your thing.
  • Don’t feel bad because you need help. I have never, ever needed help with weight loss and fitness before. This time I did. It’s okay. It’s not a sign of weakness or failure, it’s just an indication that you need a change.
  • Don’t be hard on yourself. A community of some sort will actually help with this. Even when you’re hell bent on bringing yourself down, they’ll be there to boost you back up!

In other words, if you feel like you’re needing some help with your health goals in the New Year, there are so many options available to you. You don’t have to go it alone and you never know what’s going to click for you, so give something a try and be on your way to a new you!
