Get Outdoors to Get Unstuck
When you’re stuck in a rut, sometimes all you need to do is get outside. This can be difficult during the winter months, I know, but it’s not impossible. There’s something about fresh, clean air that cleanses the soul like no stagnant house air can. And if you have a view, to boot, all the better.
I recently embarked on a three-month journey away from home to the California coast and wine country. This sounds super exciting, right? Well, it is, but getting here and getting settled was also a little nerve-wracking. Even though I’m on a fun adventure, I’m also outside my comfort zone and that takes some adjustment.
About a week into my trip I found myself feeling not super happy. I had done a couple wine tastings, but that was it. I was spending my time getting settled and catching up on work, not getting “out there.” So, the very next day I decided to do a hike that one of the pourers had told me about. It was about 30 minutes from where I was staying and she had said that you could see the ocean. And boy could I see the ocean! A full, panoramic view of the ocean, to be exact. Here I was, standing on top of a high ridge overlooking the amazing Pacific Ocean, breathing the cool ocean air, and feeling really, really good for the first time since I’d gotten to CA.
All I needed to do was get outside into some fresh air and look at something pretty. Don’t live near the ocean, never fear, here are five more places to soak in the view:
- Find a mountain, a hill, anyplace where you can get up high and look out over the landscape
- Do you have woods nearby? How about a walk on a woodsy trail
- A lake, pond, river, stream, any body of water. Water soothes the soul
- No mountains, woods or water? How about a city park or a golf course
- Even a tall, downtown building with an observation deck will do in a pinch
Get out of the house, breath some fresh air, look at something other than your four walls, and see how much better you feel. Who knows, you may even have an epiphany that sets you on a new path in your life.
